Programs For Active Seniors Rationale
Individuals who have led
active and intellectually stimulating lives, are eager to maintain a similar
life style after they retire. Since there are many
emotional and medical problems associated with inactivity, loneliness and
isolation many seniors feel compelled to find constructive uses of their time. Although there are specific
programs for "frail elderly" throughout the county, "non frail
elderly" are faced with limited choices for intellectually stimulating
activities. Some "frail elderly" programs offer combined programs,
however, the mixing of both populations of seniors inhibit some individuals from
participating. Even when desired activities
are available, transportation to such activities become a stumbling block to
participation. Many seniors no longer have a car as a primary source of mobility
and if they still have a car, many limit their driving to only short distances. Happy Retirement Centers’ Mission Happy Retirement Centers administered
by SMF Services, Inc. are dedicated to providing services and activities that
allow seniors to continue to maintain a physically active, emotionally
stable, intellectually challenged and socially enriched life style based
on their personal interests and abilities. Programs are made available close to
home, to reduce travel requirements. The Goal of SMF's Happy
Retirement
Programs is to help to reduce or eliminate those medical and emotional problems which
could result from inactivity, loneliness and isolation. SMF is committed to increase
awareness of existing community resources and to help seniors obtain the
services that they may need. Additionally, SMF is
determined to develop programming and services that utilize the talents and past
experiences of seniors who would volunteer their time, for the benefit of
others. Scope of Services Educational and leisure
classes are provided. Classes cover a wide selection of topics and most utilize
the talents of volunteers to teach them. Socials, clubs and
discussion groups are also available. These foster the sharing of different
points of view and lead to the forming of new friendships. The SMF Happy Retirement Centers also serve
as an information and referral source for existing community services.
Individuals are able to meet with a person face to face to explore service needs
and to obtain information. If necessary, telephone contact is possible. Activity Development Activities are developed
from the input of those who attend. Many new classes are possible because of the
successful recruitment of volunteers
who have the needed skills to teach the classes, as well as the desire to do so.
